SEN Information

What does Special Educational Needs (SEN) mean?

The term SEN describes the needs of children who have a difficulty which makes learning harder for them than for other children of the same age. The term SEND also includes children with physical disabilities.

What kinds of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) does the school provide for?

Communication and interaction e.g. speech, language and communication needs , Autism Spectrum Disorder
Cognition and learning e.g. a variety of difficulties that make learning harder for children.
Social, emotional and mental health difficulties e.g. attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), depression, eating disorders, attachment disorder
Sensory and/or physical needs e.g. vision impairment, hearing impairment, multi-sensory impairment, Cerebral Palsy, epilepsy
Medical needs

How does the school decide if a child has SEND?

We regularly assess all pupils’ progress. This helps us to see any pupils whose progress:

is significantly slower than that of their peers starting from the same starting point
fails to match or better their previous rate of progress
fails to close the attainment gap between them and their peers

Where assessments show that a child is not making adequate progress through the classes high quality teaching a discussion will take place between parents/carers and the school to decide if they should be placed on the SEN register.

How does the school help children with SEND?

Teachers plan for all children in their class and make sure their lessons support all children including those with SEND.
Some children may have additional small group sessions or 1:1 support to help them learn new skills more quickly.
If we feel more help or advice is needed we may, with the parents permissions, ask for a specialist to see a child. We can then put into place expert advice.
Some children may need more individual support. If this is needed we will speak to parents and may ask for a special assessment from the local authority to see if the child can receive an Education health Care Plan. This is also known as an EHCP.
